BMW vs Toyota: A Driving Experience Showdown

BMW and Toyota are two of the most well-known car brands in the world. BMW is known for its premium cars with high-performance features, while Toyota is known for its reliable and affordable cars. Recently, Auto Express put these two brands head-to-head in a comparison test, pitting the BMW 230i against the Toyota GR86.

At first glance, the BMW 230i and the Toyota GR86 may not have much in common. The BMW uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The Toyota uses a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. However, the BMW is significantly heavier than the Toyota, weighing around 3,550 lbs, compared to the Toyota’s 2,860 lbs. This means that while the BMW may be quicker to 60 mph, the Toyota is more fun to drive.

Regarding driving dynamics, the BMW 230i and the Toyota GR86 have different strengths and weaknesses. The BMW is precise, fast enough to be fun, and has a playful feel reminiscent of BMWs of the past. However, it also has lifeless steering, an artificial engine sound, and an insulated cabin that takes away from the driving experience. On the other hand, the Toyota GR86 is a throwback to old-school sports cars, with its zingy engine, accurate steering, and tail-happy chassis. It feels more like an old-school BMW than the 230i does.

Ultimately, the decision between the BMW 230i and the Toyota GR86 comes down to what you’re looking for in a car. The BMW offers more refinement and a premium brand name, while the Toyota offers more fun and a more connected driving experience. Auto Express ultimately declared the Toyota GR86 as the winner, stating that customers who care more about driving dynamics over brand prestige should give the GR86 a try.
