BMW X5 Off-Roader Rocks Trails, Shocks Everyone Off The Road

The Bavarian company has equipped its latest BMW X5 with an off-road package that adds all-terrain tyres, a five-level air suspension, and a limited-slip differential borrowed from the performance-focused M60i. Motor1 took this transformed SUV onto rocky trails to see if it could live up to its rugged promise. Despite its luxury roots and lack of low-range gearing, the X5 impressed with its ground clearance and traction over uneven surfaces, scaling small rock climbs and muddy slopes without feeling out of its depth.

Power comes from a turbocharged straight-six that delivers a lively punch at any speed, helping the X5 claw its way through slippery sections. Paired with a suite of off-road driving modes, the system modulates torque swiftly and precisely, making up for the absence of true locking differentials. The versatile air suspension helps keep the chassis composed, although the SUV’s biggest limitation is its ride height rather than raw grip.

Even on challenging descents, the hill descent control function eased the X5’s way down slippery slopes, letting us concentrate on steering. The wide approach to obstacles occasionally caused the underside to scrape, but careful driving minimized scuffs. Cabin comforts remained first-rate, and the driver aids provided extra reassurance when the trail demanded a gentle, measured approach.

For those who want a premium SUV that can handle a bit more than groomed roads, BMW’s optioned-up X5 delivers an unexpected level of capability. It stays true to its comfort-first identity on the highway while offering enough off-road confidence to tackle muddy paths or unpaved adventures. This is no pure rock crawler, but it strikes an appealing balance of practicality and boldness for the average driver seeking versatility.
