BMW enters the week with a big bang. With seven new models revealed, the Bavarian company is definitely on a roll. There’s the new BMW X3 M and X4 M models, with their respective Competition versions. The revamped X3 and X4 non-M version also arrive, along with the 4 Series Gran Coupe. However, what we will be checking out today are the most powerful variants in this list –  X3 M and X4 M Competition cars.
At first sight, it’s so easy to identify the design differences between the new models. But, they also received the same amount of tweaks under the sheet metal, which might be even more important than their exterior profile. Both the refreshed BMW X3 M and X4 M cars in Competition carries a revised engine. It’s the exact same S58 3-litre straight-six unit found in the current M3 and M4 Competition models.
Its upgrade means there will be a forged crankshaft, a new cooling system, and extra oil and transmission coolers. It also hosts a new oil supply system, which gears towards dynamic racetrack action. It also optimized the engine’s oil pan weight by including two separate chambers and an integrated suction channel.
Meanwhile, to deliver lubricant from the smaller oil sump, the powerplant comes with an extra suction stage. This serves as a volume buffer, guaranteeing a reliable oil supply at all times. Even during extreme longitudinal and lateral acceleration.
With the upgraded powerplant, the torque went up a bit in the X3 M and X4 M Competition models, from 600 Nm to 650 Nm. With other modifications in key areas, the new versions can sprint 100 km/h (62 mph) faster, in 3.8 seconds. While the top speed remains at 250 km/h (155 mph), the optional M Driver’s Pack allows you to raise the threshold to 285 km/h.
