Crossovers are not usually bought for excitement and performance. They are usually for drivers who need more space for families, work or travel. Well, not all crossovers are created equal. Take the BMW X4 M40i and Porsche Macan GTS as examples. They clearly don’t fit in what people would expect from a normal crossover. But which one is better in a 0-124 mph sprint? The BMW X4 M40i is powered by a 3.0 liter I6 variant of the M2’s N55 engine. It is able to deliver 355 hp; just 10 ponies shy of the M2’s 365 hp. 0-60 mph is achieved in just 4.7 seconds. For an all-wheel drive crossover with a big trunk and seats five people, that’s mighty quick! Even more thrilling is the sound that it gives which is very similar to the BMW I6’s.
The competition is the Porsche Macan GTS that gives BMW a run for its money. It is also powered by a 3.0 liter turbocharged engine but in V6 configuration delivering 360 hp. The engine is mated to a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. 0-60 mph is achieved in just 4.4 seconds. With numbers slightly higher than the X4 M40i, plus a sensational sound, it does have an advantage. However, the design is quite bland and the interior space doesn’t offer the same practicality as the BMW.
There is no doubt that these two SUVs are crossovers that take performance seriously. Tough choice if you’re looking to buy one of the two.
