BMW is set to unveil the updated version of its X5 M high-performance SUV in the coming months. In the meantime, the company is showcasing the current model at the BMW Welt in Munich. This particular X5 M boasts a Sepang Bronze exterior and two-tone wheels, as well as the Shadowline exterior upgrade, laser headlights, and carbon side mirror caps. Inside, the X5 M features a full Merino leather ivory upholstery.
The X5 M has already entered the 2023 model year in the US. This means that the upcoming Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) update will be offered as a 2024 model. The LCI will bring evolutionary styling, an updated iDrive infotainment system, and a new engine: the mild-hybrid 4.4-liter V8 S68, which boasts 600 horsepower. The X5 M and X6 will only be sold in the US as Competition models and will have new engines, the M60i, in 2023.
The X5 is expected to become a Competition-only model in the US, following the same path as the X6. The M Performance version of the X7 for the 2023 model year will also receive the new engine. These updates will help BMW remain competitive in the high-performance SUV market. The S68 engine will be lighter, cheaper to produce, and more environmentally friendly.
The new engine is estimated to have an energy density 20% higher than the current Gen5 batteries. With just one minute of charging, it can provide 30 miles of range. The S68 engine will have a standard diameter of 46 millimeters and come in two heights: 95 mm for cars and 120 mm for SUVs. It is expected to be a significant advancement in technology and sustainability for BMW.
