It is not normal to consider the Honda Type-R as a direct rival for the BMW M135i. The two are very different cars. However, the Honda Type-R has been bragging a lot about its new features and this got EVO Magazine curious. Both super hatches deliver over 300bhp, but one is rear-wheel drive and the other is front-wheel drive. Can this Honda really match up to a BMW on a straight line? Find out on this video below:
The BMW M135i used in this drag race has more power than the competitor. It is powered by a 3-liter turbocharged straight six delivering no less than 326 HP. The M Performance car also takes the lead in terms of torque at 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) being sent to the rear wheels.
Honda’s secret weapon is having less weight. It is powered by a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine making 310 HP and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. These numbers are lower than the BMW competitor but they are really close in terms of power to weight ratios. The Honda Type-R has 225 HP/ton while the BMW is at 228 HP/ton.
To win this round, other factors come into play. First off, the transmission needs to have the capacity to put that power down. Driver skill is also another thing since these cars are both manuals. EVO says that the biggest advantage of BMW here is being rear-wheel drive. Because of that, the weight shifts towards the rear wheels at launch which adds the grip it needs. In the end, the BMW M135i wins.
