If the discussion is about stripped out, hardcore, and track-ready sports cars, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is usually considered as king. Even other automakers know that. In fact, many of them have released really good driving sports cars to compete with the GT3 911. BMW was part of the quest to beat the Porsche king. The German automaker made a few attempts to take Porsche down the pedestal. The E46 BMW M3 CSL and E92 M3 GTS were both born to compete in this segment. Though both were close, it was not quite enough to take the crown from Porsche. Can BMW finally do it with the new BMW M4 GTS?
Auto Motor Sport did a review and comparison of the two cars. The result? Well, they thought that the M4 GTS is just as good as the 911 GT3 RS!
Yes, you heard it right. In terms of performance factors like acceleration, handling and braking, both cars are really very close. In a Hockeheim Kleiner Kurs lap, the 911 GT3 RS beat the M4 GTS by less than a second. Both cars are able to accelerate to 200 km/h (124 mph) in the same time.
If all things are considered and the Porsche doesn’t really have a clear edge over the M4 GTS in terms of braking, speed, and acceleration, then it is safe to say that they are equals. There is no other car that has ever gotten close in the past years. It’s a mighty achievement.
