The G30 BMW 5 Series is going to be revealed soon. The prototype has been around testing for some time now and the first review is finally here.
The Autocar crew belongs to those lucky few who got the 2017 BMW 5 Series to drive around and test. They brought us back their first impressions and opinions of the future model.
First of all, the new 5er will be around 100 kg lighter than its predecessor. The weight will depend on the chosen engine and other specs, but in any case, it will be significantly reduced.
There will be plenty of variants to choose from. As for the 518d and 520d models, they will be practically the same as before. There is a new 530i which will use a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine and deliver 252 HP and a 540d, a model which will run on a B57 3.0-liter TwinTurbo unit. The M550i will replace the current 550i as an M Performance model meant to fill the gap between the 540i and the F90 M5.
The cars running on 2.0-liter engines will use the same suspension components used in the future 3 series. The review confirms that the handling of the G30 BMW 5 Series is better than it ever was thanks to axles revisions.
The customers will be able to choose an all-wheel drive option and enhance the driving experience even more. Along with that, there is also an all-wheel drive steering which will have better feedback and might easily be the best on the market so far.
Autocar talks about the comfort as well:
It’s safe to say this is the best-riding 5 Series yet. The new chassis imbues it with a more cosseting and controlled feel over any given road than its predecessor. It is very accomplished, whether coping with high-frequency bumps around town or more undulating topography at higher speeds out on the open road. It’s quiet, too. Indeed, tire roar is very well suppressed, indicating it will be a brilliant motorway cruiser
