Michelin gives The Grand Tour’s Richard Hammond drift lessons at Ladoux. This place was engineered to be the ultimate testing ground. At 450-hectares in size, it has 27 miles of track and an array of technically demanding trials. It is a track like no other. Can Hammond stay in the course? Check out this video below:
Hammond was quite a sport in this video. He actually admits that, despite hosting Top Gear for many years and now The Grand Tour, he doesn’t actually know how to drift. Every drift seen in the episodes of the past were all done by stunt drivers and clever editing. Now that’s a tough thing to admit!
Now he is serious in learning how to drift properly. Thus, drift lessons are due. Good thing Michellin and Haslin know exactly how to do this. They take the BMW M4 to a circular track soaked by sprinklers. Haslin’s steering wheel technique is superb and he’s constantly modulating the throttle with tiny inputs. Hammond doesn’t do well at first — handling the M4 quite violently. The same thing happened when Hammond tried to learn transitioning. It just looked so easy with Haslin doing it.
In the end (and with lots of practice) Hammond finally learns how to drift!
