The current-generation BMW X5 debuted in 2014 but the German automaker’s next-gen is already close to production. BMW is completely revamping the chassis in its model lineup so the refresh came a bit early. All of them are switching to BMW’s modular CLAR architecture, which debuted on the 7 Series. So it makes sense that the new BMW X5 may debut a but earlier than scheduled. Here is a camo covered prototype seen driving around:
The prototype in the photo is definitely an X5 – it has massive front air intakes and quad exhausts. The suspensions do seem a bit low for an X5 but we are not sure yet what BMW is planning to do with it. The engine may be the 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 engine from the upcoming BMW M5 which is likely to be paired with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic. It is likely to have an all-wheel drive system just like the new M5. At this point, it is uncertain if it can be switched to rear-wheel drive. A more viable feature would be the ‘4WD Sport’ mode.
Some new design features were also revealed in these spy photos. Bring your attention to the Hofmeister Kink. It is almost not visible because of a more rounded shape. Looking closely at the headlight, they also don’t connect with the grille, unlike the current model. These elements indicate that the design may be inspired by the X3. However, we will not know for sure at this camo covered state.
