[VIDEO] From M5 to M3 CS: BMW’s Journey on the Nürburgring

In the world of high-performance automobiles, one thing is clear: BMW’s M cars are not just getting bigger, but they’re also getting faster. This relentless pursuit of speed and performance has been on full display at the Nürburgring, where lap times have become a benchmark for a car’s capabilities. The evolution of BMW’s M cars over the years is a testament to the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries.

In 2018, the M5 F90 set the stage with a lap time of 7:38.92 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Fast forward three years, and the limited-run M5 CS shattered that record with a time of 7:29.57. Now, in 2023, the new M3 CS has further reduced the time to an impressive 7:28.76, showcasing the continuous improvement in BMW’s performance sedans. But the surprises didn’t stop there.

On the same day, development engineer Jörg Weidinger took the M2 G87 for a spin, setting a new record among compact cars with a lap time of 7:38.70. The M4 CSL, another performance beast, completed the lap in just 7:18.13. Furthermore, an unreleased M prototype hinted at what’s to come, with a blazing lap time that suggests the next year’s M4 CS is set to break more records.

Looking ahead to 2024, BMW enthusiasts can anticipate the arrival of the new M5 (G90) and its highly anticipated Touring (G99) variant. However, with the switch to a plug-in hybrid V8 from the XM mastodon, these cars are likely to carry more weight. The question remains: how will this affect their lap times? Only time will tell.
