Video: Modified BMW 335d Test by The Smoking Tire

One of the best 3 Series cars in the recent history of BMW is the E90-Series BMW 335d. Under the hood, it is powered by a 3.0 liter turbocharged diesel I6 engine delivering 265 hp and a mighty 425 lb-ft of torque. The high torque allows the 335d to be a tire-scorcher. It is definitely one of the best cars to drive in the market. In this video, The Smoking Tire reviews a modified BMW 335d and sees how it actually performs.

On the most basic level, the BMW E90 335d is great because it’s fast, well-built, and frugal on gas which makes it very practical. The car used for this review has been modified with an ECU tune and some choice suspension bits to make the ultimate well-rounded daily driver/weekend cruiser combination. The owner wanted this tune and ended up boosting both the hp and torque up to 305 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. This torque number is even more than the current BMW M3.

On the looks, this car is like wine; it has aged well. The E90 BMW 3 Series has lowered suspension and different wheels that makes it very handsome. The interior has aged well and looks premium.

During the test itself, Matt Farah was impressed when he first pulls away because the torque had a low-end punch. It was able to pull hard effortlessly and reached highway speeds far quicker than someone might expect from a diesel. The silky smooth sound was also pretty good for a diesel. But the tune adds even more high-end power, something that most stock diesels struggle with. This car doesn’t die off before 4,000 rpm, but pulls hard almost to 5,000 rpm.

Don’t forget how economic this car is on fuel despite having so much power. The owner of this car says that after a long traffic-filled commute, the car averages about 28 mpg which is impressive considering the performance on tap and the stop-and-go traffic. He also gets almost 40 mph on an open highway. Try that in hybrid.

Even when modified, the BMW 335d remains one of the best all-around sport sedans in the market.
