The amount of automobile comparison tests available in the information age of internet dominance is quite mind-blowing. It’s pretty normal to get a new YouTube video every day that features some of the epic-priced exotic cars facing off against each other in a quarter-mile drag race. And it gets better these days as you can hear and look its inside more closely, besides watching the car race. It almost feels as if you can actually touch them. Remember when a simple comparison test in a magazine between two normal sports cars seemed epic thirty years ago? Well, that has become a distant memory now. One example is this classic showdown between the E36 BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG.
Published by Motor Trend magazine in April 1997, this comparison test has a killer cover page photo. As being a kid back then, I don’t think I would have appreciated the weight of this specific test. But, this showdown must have been fantastic back in its day.
Both cars are in a sedan body styling, which was unusual in 1997. They introduced the E36 M3 Sedan as a new era of fast, sporty compact sedans. An advantage that made them so enticing and loved by many.
Until the end, the battle between the two cars was a close call and it’s not hard to figure that out, but eventually, E36 BMW M3 Sedan won. In the midst of the information age, vintage comparison tests remind us of why we admire cars of those good old days and miss their charisma and spirit.
