2024 BMW X5 M Competition: Electrifying Performance Revealed

The 2024 BMW X5 M Competition stands out as the top choice, offering remarkable performance without the divisive design of its counterpart, the XM. This model, exclusively available as the Competition variant, shares the potent “S68” engine with the XM but sheds the electric components, making it lighter and more cost-effective.

A recent Autobahn video showcases the X5 M Competition reaching its claimed 0 to 62 mph time of 3.9 seconds, emphasizing its powerful twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. Compliance with strict EU noise and emission regulations produces a somewhat muted engine sound. On the Autobahn, the SUV hits its 180 mph electronic top speed limiter, a limit that can be raised with the optional M Driver’s Package.

Despite the industry trend toward downsizing, BMW M remains committed to the V8 engine until at least the decade’s end. The next-generation X5 (codenamed “G65”) is set to continue this tradition in the US. However, the broader M lineup is undergoing a transformation, with future models embracing hybrid and electric powertrains.

The XM marks the beginning of this shift, leading the way for electric M5 Sedan and Touring models, with an M3-like electric vehicle expected around 2027.
