During the second event of the 2024 FIM Superbike World Championship in Barcelona, BMW Motorrad Motorsport secured a significant victory over the weekend. Following a remarkable triumph and pole position on Saturday, the team had even more reason to celebrate Sunday. Toprak Razgatlioglu (TUR) and his BMW M 1000 RR won in the thrilling Superpole Race after securing third place in the morning’s second major race. Additionally, Michael van der Mark (NED) made an impressive recovery to finish fourth, while Garrett Gerloff (USA) of the Bonovo Action BMW Racing Team secured a spot in the top 10.
The Superpole Race was thrilling right from the start. Despite starting from pole position, Razgatlioglu slipped to fifth place initially but quickly surged back to fourth by the fourth lap. He executed a breathtaking manoeuvre on the following lap to reclaim the lead. Throughout the race, he exchanged the lead with Alvaro Bautista (ESP) and Ducati’s Andrea Iannone (ITA). Ultimately, Razgatlioglu secured his second-weekend victory with an incredible last-corner move.
Once again, starting from pole position in the afternoon’s second feature event, Razgatlioglu initially slipped to fourth place but quickly ascended to the podium position. Throughout most of the race, he closely pursued Ducati riders Bautista and Nicolò Bulega (ITA) but ultimately couldn’t catch up to them in the final sprint for the lead. He concluded the weekend with a third-place finish on the podium. Teammate van der Mark, securing fourth place, further contributed to the team’s impressive performance and joined the celebration. In the Superpole Race, Van der Mark also finished sixth.
On Sunday, the Bonovo Action BMW Racing Team experienced success, staging a comeback to the top 10. Riders Gerloff and Scott Redding (GBR) engaged in intense positional battles throughout the race. Ultimately, Gerloff secured tenth place, with Redding closely trailing behind in eleventh position, just 0.4 seconds behind.
The third round of the WorldSBK season is scheduled to take place at Assen (NED) on April 19–21.
