BMW M4 GT3 Shines on Le Mans Podium

At Le Mans, BMW M Motorsport experienced a range of emotions when returning to the top class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans after 25 years. In a race marked by challenging weather, the Team WRT #31 BMW M4 GT3, driven by Augusto Farfus, Sean Gelael, and Darren Leung, clinched second place on the LMGT3 podium. This marked BMW’s first podium finish at Le Mans since 2011. Unfortunately, the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8, the #20 BMW M Hybrid V8 Art Car and the #46 BMW M4 GT3 were all forced out of the race due to accidents.

BMW M Motorsport celebrated their return with extensive fan and guest programs, highlighting the 20th BMW Art Car, the #20 BMW M Hybrid V8 designed by artist Julie Mehretu, and the sporting efforts of BMW M Team WRT.

The week was filled with excitement, starting with scrutineering in the city centre and concluding with a podium finish for the #31 BMW M4 GT3. Farfus, Gelael, and Leung maintained their composure and secured second place despite heavy rain and a multi-hour safety car period. The sister car, #46, was in contention for the win before an accident ended their race.

Both BMW M Hybrid V8 cars in the Hypercar class showed strong pace but faced setbacks. The #15 car, driven by Dries Vanthoor, retired after a high-speed crash, and the #20 car, driven by Robin Frijns, also crashed but managed to return to the track for the finish.

Comments from the team highlighted the emotional and physical challenges of the race. Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, and Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, praised the team’s resilience and dedication. Drivers expressed their pride in the team’s performance and the support they received, emphasizing the special atmosphere and historical significance of Le Mans.

Despite the ups and downs, the #31 BMW M4 GT3’s second-place finish was a testament to the team’s hard work and determination. The experience at Le Mans was a mix of celebration and learning, setting the stage for future successes.
