Alex Zanardi, ex-WTCC driver for BMW, wins Paralympic gold in handcycle after losing both legs

Today, a man brings us inspiration. Alex Zanardi, an ex-F1 pilot and WTCC driver for BMW, lost his legs in a violent crash back in 2001. The carbon fibre cut both of his legs and he miraculously woke up in the hospital bed after three days of being in a coma and his heart stopping once. Though both his legs are gone, this did not stop Zanardi’s love for racing. After more than ten years of rehabilitation, he is back on the track again. But now, he is not driving a car in the F1 or WTCC. Instead he participated and won a gold medal in paralympics cycling – a hand cycle powered by the arms.

Zanardi was a famous race car driver back in the ’90s where he won two CART championship titles in North America, and driving for F1 teams like Jordan, Minardi and Lotus. From 2005 through 2009, the Italian driver ran in the WTCC series with a BMW 320si before shifting his focus to handcycling. He is now 45-years old as he wins his first paralympic gold medal.

Good job Zanardi, you are an inspiration!
