When the BMW X7 was launched in 2019, the beautiful Ametrin Metallic made a name for itself. After BMW decided to feature it on the M8 Gran Coupe, it became even more popular. A little fast forward, years later and now it’s ALPINA ‘s turn to dress Ametrin in its own version of the X7. The ALPINA XB7 2021 is now on the market. But before that, we went north to Monticello to evaluate the7-seater SUV on the road as well as on the track.

Also, let’s recap some XB7 tech specs. The ALPINA XB7 is powered by the B7 limousine’s 4.4 liters BiTurbo engine. So the same tuning treatment is obtained; larger twin-scroll turbochargers improved intake and exhaust manifolds. Additional coolers for water, transmission, and oil, and a new exhaust system for stainless steel.

All that combines to generate 612 horsepower and torque of 590 lb-ft, making it the most powerful ALPINA to date. Even if it’s just a couple of ponies. The ALPINA XB7 will go beyond 180 mph on an electronically restricted basis.

Also, the ALPINA XB7 is provided with a revamped ZF-supplied automatic eight-speed gearbox for quicker reactions and smoother shifts. This gearbox is still coupled with an all-wheel-drive system from Drive. But one that has also been tuned by ALPINA and has a limited-slip rear differential that is electronically controlled.

Therefore, with the XB7 on the road, you can play around easily. Especially because the engineers in Buchloe equipped the ALPINA XB7 with customized suspension kinematics and geometries. As well as a two-axle air suspension, to keep all that weight in check while hustling around it.

For various reasons, its as-standard air suspension can increase and lower and distinct speeds. The suspension would be raised at low speeds to avoid steep driveways or speed bumps. The ALPINA XB7 will lower its suspension and ride height for improved stability at higher speeds, though.
