In the first nine months of 2021, BMW sold almost twice as many electric cars as in the previous year. From January to September, BMW sold 231,576 electric vehicles, 98.9% more than the previous year. However, we have to take into account that the pandemic affected last year’s sales.
Things do not look much better for 2021 either. Though cases are decreasing, car manufacturers still can’t produce and sell more vehicles because of microchips shortage. Although this is the case, sales of BMW’s all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles increased by 43.1% in the third quarter compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 78,333 units.
To date, the BMW Group has sold 59,688 all-electric vehicles, a 121.4% increase since the start of 2021. This year’s sales were boosted by the popularity of the BMW iX3, which was launched in Europe earlier this year and has since sold more than 20,008 units worldwide. Pieter Nota announced the launch of the BMW iX and i4 in November, which will further accelerate the rise of electric mobility. Nota was also overwhelmed by the passion of the enthusiasts who support these new models.
BMW has sold 1,932,236 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles so far this year. This is a 17.9% increase on the same period last year. The data shows that 1,703,080 BMWs have been sold, of which 764,958 were SUVs. MINI sales of EVs increased by 81.9%, MINI Cooper SE, its most popular fully-electric model with 106.6% increase in sales.
