BMW Gran Coupe has been greenlighted for production

The BMW Gran Coupe concept has just been greenlighted for production. This was confirmed the day before BMW’s Design Night held last July 22, 2010 at the Welt in Munich. Sources say that the car will carry the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe badge.

BMW enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that the overall design from the concept version will be carried on, including design cues from the 6 Series fleet. Marketed as a four-door coupe, it will be a direct competitor to Audi A7 and Mercedes CLS.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is expected to launch in 2012 and will go on sale before the year ends. Customers can choose from four engines: two diesels and two gasoline powerplants. BMW is also working on an ActiveHybrid model. There are also unconfirmed rumors that an M Gran Coupe model could possibly arise.
