Despite the obvious effects of the coronavirus pandemic, the BMW Group saw an increase in its third-quarter sales year-on-year. With a solid growth of 8.6 percent, BMW Group delivered a total of 675,680 vehicles worldwide.
As expected, January to September sales saw the impact of the pandemic. During these months, the company had a 12.5 percent decrease in its sales. Still, Pieter Nota, a member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, thanked their strong model line-up for the increase in the third-quarter sales. The almost 50 percent sales growth on their electrified vehicles pleased BMW Group as well. Around 10,000 fully-electric MINIs rolled out to their customers since January.
Compared to last year’s third quarter, this year BMW Group saw a 9.8 percent increased sales for BMW vehicles. BMW had relevant product progress with their BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, BMW 5 Series, and the BMW X3. All of these models now come with four different drive trains. However, due to the pandemic, the first nine months of 2020 had 11.3 percent fewer BMW vehicles delivered.
MINI brand ended September in a good note with 208,144 vehicles sold. Also, it posted a 1.9 percent growth in the third quarter. On the other hand, the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars look forward to making a remarkable end to this year. It reported a 2,651 sales since January with increased 54 percent third-quarter sales as compared with the second quarter. Motorcycles also had a 20.9 percent increase in third-quarter sales. From January to September a total of 129,599 motorcycles were sold.
BMW and MINI electrified vehicles saw substantial growth this year. The Group delivered 116,381 electrified vehicles in the first nine months this year. In the third quarter, the company sold 54,719 units which are 46.6 percent more compared to last year. The new plug-in hybrid variants from BMW 5 Series, 3 Series, and X2 lead the BMW Group on top of the premium electrified segment globally. Also, fully-electric iX3 will begin to roll out before this year ends.
BMW Group has a clear plan for its electrified vehicles. Next year, they will continue the electrification of fully-electric BMW i4 and the BMW iNEXT. In 2030, the company plans to produce around seven million electrified vehicles; two thirds would be fully-electric. In 2023, the company will offer around 25 electrified models including fully-electric BMW 7 Series, X1, and 5 Series.
Due to the coronavirus, the number of cars delivered in Germany decreased by 16 percent. But third-quarter sales increased by 12.1 percent with a 44 percent increase in sales of electrified vehicles. In Europe, a total of 648,107 BMW and MINI units were sold since January. And the third-quarter sales were higher than last year by 7.1 percent. Electrified vehicles also saw significant growth in the region.
Sales in the Americas seem to be the most affected by the pandemic. The third-quarter sales decreased by 17.0 percent compared to last year. Also, the number of vehicles sold from January to September decreased by 25.7 percent. However, the promising demand for electrified vehicles showed in the last quarter with a 28.2 percent increase. In China, BMW and MINI units saw a 6.4 percent increase in sales for the first nine months. Recovery on sales continued in China with a 31.1 percent increase in sales for the third quarter. Electrified vehicles also increased its sales by 7.4 percent in the country.
Despite the pandemic, the BMW Group boasts of its growth. Famous brands such as BMW, Rolls-Royce, MINI, and Motorrad uphold their sales in this season. The solid increase in their third-quarter sales shows its success in the industry of premium cars.
