BMW halts production at its Spartanburg plant

Last Friday, March 20, BMW announced that the production at its manufacturing facility in Spartanburg will be put to a temporary halt starting April 3 due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The statement released by the company said that it might take a few weeks before the facility becomes operational again. Their target date of reopening is April 19, if things go according to plan.

“The health and protection of our associates is our top priority,” the statement said. “At the same time, the dynamic development of the [coronavirus] pandemic is having a major impact on the global demand for cars. BMW Manufacturing is taking a flexible approach and adjusting our production volumes accordingly.”

With around 11,000 employees, the Spartanburg plant has a production capacity of 450,000 units. Among the most popular cars built there are the BMW X5, X3, and X7.
