Automotive News reports that BMW AG has hired Frank Weber, former Opel product chief and former lead engineer for the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid. With Weber’s expertise in terms of electric vehicles, this will definitely give BMW the edge is sustainable development. This is a strategic move as BMW plans to launch the BMW i3 full-electric vehicle and its i8 plug-in hybrid in 2013.
Weber will be directly reporting to Klaus Draeger, BMW’s head of research and development. BMW’s decision to hire Weber is a proof that BMW is serious in getting people with expertise in alternative powertrain. BMW does not usually hire top-ranking executives from their competitors as they prefer to develop the talents from people within the company. Many of BMW’s high ranking executives have been with the company for many years.
With Weber on the BMW team, we can expect a more intense development in terms of BMW electric vehicles.
