When BMW began to introduce their electric vehicles earlier this year, Board Member Ian Robertson said that the price will be above 40,000 euros in Europe. The general public understood that this pricing is due to the large manufacturing costs and the expensive parts that these vehicles will have. With a price like that, it will be quite hard to reach BMW’s goal of selling at least 30,000 units per year of the i3 beginning in 2014. BMW seemed to realize this and considered lowering the price of the electric vehicle to make it more affordable to the consumers.

Yesterday, BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer revealed to German newspaper that at launch, the i3 will cost less than a 5 Series. This means that it will cost less than the 40,000 euros that Robertson said earlier this year. With a price like this, the electric vehicle is quite affordable. This price point will allow BMW to remain competitive in the electric vehicles segment and successfully target customers from other non-premium brands.
