BMW i8 review by Driving

Here is an excerpt of the BMW i8 review by Driving:

In terms of handling, the i8 was planted and poised. The adjustable suspension (Comfort and Sport) limits body roll to a degree or two, the steering is perfectly weighted and, in a very welcome move, the brake pedal actually has some real feel beneath one’s boot.

The unspoken advantage to the i8′s layout is the on-demand all-wheel-drive ability the engine and electric motor deliver. It banished unwanted wheelspin and added a great deal to the driving dynamics. When heading into a corner, the system sends more power rearward, which reduces understeer. At the apex of the corner, as the driver begins to roll back into the throttle, it shifts more driving force forward to haul the i8 out of the bend with more authority and poise. Throw in the perfect 50/50-front/rear weight distribution and you have a drive that is commendably neutral. Mind you, when horsing around, the back-end did go walk-about, but it did so in a very controlled manner. If there is a comment, it is that the i8 would benefit from better tires — the stock low rolling resistance units tend to break free earlier than something with a softer compound.

As for the rest of it, the i8 is typical BMW — lots of luxury, two very comfortable front seats and toys galore. In fact, the only options are three cosmetic packages that bring a slightly different exterior look and interior materials.
