Surprisingly, now that the BMW iX is here, it has only a few existing rivals. Sure, there are many electric crossovers either on sale or on the way at the moment, but not all of them are custom EVs based on EV platforms. The Audi e-Tron and Mercedes-Benz EQC are both based on conventional ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) architectures, cars that you would think would be the iX’s closest competition. So they’re not rivals for apples-to-apples. There is, however, a new German that is identical to the iX, the Volkswagen ID.4, in terms of both construction and style.
Apparently, in terms of comfort and facilities, the Volkswagen ID.4 is not a direct rival, either, being that you can purchase three ID.4s for the cost of one BMW iX. Nevertheless, the two are very close in layout, construction, scale, shape, and style. But let’s take a look at how they compare their designs.
Both cars look very fine from the side. The BMW iX is a little more conventional, while the ID.4 looks a little curvier and a little more athletic. Whereas, with its square fender flares and floating D-pillar, the iX looks high-tech and modern. I really like the way both cars look from the rear. But the iX is the more futuristic and the one that’s probably going to feel unique for longer. So, again, it takes a win.
The Volkswagen ID.4 receives a large LED light strip from the back that links the two taillights. It looks a little more high-tech than the basic, but stunning, slender taillights of BMW. Although neither is especially beautiful nor particularly hideous. With its fancy LED dance lights, it’s like the rear end of the Volkswagen that will continue to satisfy customers.
On the inside, both cars have similar concepts, too, only implemented a little differently. With a simpler, more minimalist approach, both BMW and Volkswagen went, while still using recycled materials and new, sharp designs. The BMW i3 influenced the interior designs of both cars. The BMW iX definitely looks more premium inside, but then it’s a lot more costly again.
In terms of price and performance, though the two cars are worlds apart, there will be cheaper BMW iX models on the horizon, as well as more expensive ID.4 models. So, over the years, the price gap will close a little. So, over the next few years, their designs might be more relevant than one would imagine, as consumers might choose between a high-end ID.4 or an entry-level BMW iX.
