BMW Motorsport withdraws from 2011 World Touring Car Championship

BMW Motorsport have just announced the withdrawal from the 2011 World Touring Car Championship. This decision has been made in relation to the internal changes happening in BMW Motorsport. Dr. Mario Theissen, the current BMW Motorsport boss, has announced his retirement last week. BMW is also returning to the 2012 DTM season after a 20 year absence.

Even though the factory teams are pulling out of WTCC, BMW will provide the turbocharged 1.6 liter direct injection race engines to customers in private racing teams for an FIA compliant choice for the World Touring Car Championship. The decision to pull out from WTCC will give BMW Motorsport the luxury of focusing their efforts on both the M3 GT2 and M3 DTM programs. BMW will also be actively participating in the World Rally Championship through a partnership between MINI and Prodrive.

Reports say that many of the BMW WTCC drivers like Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus willbe re-assigned to the European M3 GT2 program with the help of the Schnitzer team.
