BMW of North America issued a recall for 36 model-year 2017 BMW X5 sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive50i, xDrive35d and xDrive40e SUVs. The automaker determined an issue with the passenger frontal airbag modules that use certain airbag inflators. There is a possibility that they may not vent properly in a crash that requires passenger frontal airbag deployment.
If this happens, it can cause the inflator to rupture and propel metal fragments into the cabin which are hazards to the occupant. The metal fragments can cause serious injury or death.
BMW assures the public that this is not related to the massive ongoing safety crisis involving airbag inflators manufactured by Japan’s Takata Corp.
The replacement of the airbag modules by the dealers will be free of charge.
