BMW sales increased by 14.6% in 2010

The BMW Group reported a sales increase of 1,224,280 cars in 2010. This is equivalent to a 14.6% rise compared to their 2009 figures. The new BMW 5 Series was a major sales boost for BMW last year. It allowed a steady increase of deliveries by 22.6% year-on-year to 211,968 units in 2010.

There were 141,358 BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce vehicles delivered last month. This is 14% more than a year earlier. Full-year deliveries amount to 1.46 million, surpassing its target of 1.4 million.

The new BMW 6-Series convertible and the BMW 1 Series M Coupe will make its debut this week in the Detroit Show. Mini will also present the MINI Paceman concept car, a coupe based on the Countryman SUV.

Ian Robertson, a member of the board management said: “2010 was a very successful year for us. We are “spot on” with our new models and are building the cars people desire. We advanced on all continents, in large and small countries alike and continued with a good sales balance between Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Looking ahead, we plan to remain the world’s top selling premium automaker and expect sales to climb to over 1.5 million units in 2011 setting new record highs for the Group and its three brands.”

BMW now sets a new target for 2020: 2 million car sales. The stable growth in China and a rebound in the U.S. have set the recovery of luxury-car demand to a safe pace.

A total of 16,132 BMW and Mini vehicles were sold in China in December, a rise of 59% over 2009. 2010 sales rose to 168,000 units, a year-on-year rise of 86.7%. BMW Group’s Mini brand sold 234,175 vehicles in 2010, a yearly increase of 8.1%. The Mini Countryman SUV is the best seller.

BMW is ready to go head to head with its competitors in the premium car segment as they aim to dethrone BMW in 2015.
