The global pandemic made a big dent in the automotive industry in 2020. But some car makers managed to stay on track. Despite the hard times, BMW saw increased sales for its electrified cars in 2020.
Car manufacturers have expressed their concern over the long-term effects of the pandemic. And as they report their numbers for 2020, we can see how this crisis impacted the industry. BMW’s reported figures showed its resilience and strong presence in the market. Also, specific segments even had better performance than in 2019. In this case, electrified cars took the spotlight for BMW.
BMW reported having sold a total of 92,646 electrified BMW and MINI models worldwide. Compared to 2019, this number shows an increase of 31.8 percent for electrified cars. Further, BMW saw increased sales for its fully-electric vehicles by 13 percent. Plug-in hybrids also increased in sales, around 40 percent in 2020. The increase in the demand for electrified cars points to the demand switch for Bimmer fans.
In Europe alone, electrified cars made up 15 percent of all BMW cars sold in the region. With 17,580 vehicles sold in 2020, the MINI brand proved its popularity. Even though the i3 was the only fully electrified car in 2020, it also performed well in the market. BMW’s fourth quarter of 2020 reported 76,246 electrified units delivered to its consumers. And that showed an increase of 55 percent compared to 2019’s fourth quarter.
As expected, the BMW Group has now added more electric vehicles to their lineup. The carmaker added more pure electric and plug-in hybrid EVs this year. Up to 13 new EV models will enter the market worldwide. BMW plans to double its EVs by 2023 with 25 more electrified units, half of it fully electric. The production of the fully-electric BMW iX and i4 even welcomed 2021.
