BMW surpasses Tesla in United States 2021 sales

Compared to California-based electric car maker Tesla, BMW of North America managed to sell more luxury cars in 2021. This is based on newly available Experian U.S. vehicle registration data, according to AutoNews. The electric car maker was in second place, ahead of Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. According to Experian, BMW registered 347,453 new cars in the United States in 2021 this week. With Tesla’s 342,412 shares, it is clear that BMW has sold 5,041 more cars than Tesla. Since Tesla does not disclose the number of sales by market, the data is based solely on registrations.

However, there may be some gaps in the examination of the data. According to the same source, “sales and registration figures do not match exactly”. This is because cars bought in one month can be registered in the following months. In addition, if exact figures are unknown, registration data may include estimates. According to an initial analysis published last week, Tesla will therefore beat the Bavarian brand in 2021. With 352,471 cars sold in the United States, Cox Automotive gave Tesla the edge over BMW. The competition was close, regardless of which brand won last year.

Tesla registrations increased by 71% in 2021, while BMW registrations increased by only 24%. BMW USA recorded a total of 336,644 units. Lexus recorded 304,475 car sales, while Mercedes reported 276,102. Based on its plants in Berlin and Austin, Tesla expects further growth of 50% in 2022. The latter will offer the Cybertruck and the Model Y.

Crossovers topped the overall sales charts for BMW and Tesla. Last year, the Model Y was Tesla’s best-selling electric vehicle in the United States, with 169,325 registrations. The Model 3 came in second with 151,599 registrations. BMW’s light commercial vehicles sold 179,840 in 2021, a 23% increase from the previous year.

When BMW launches new electric cars, 2022 will undoubtedly be an exciting year. The i4 and iX crossovers will be available in March, while the first electric BMW 7 Series – i7 – will be launched later in the year.
