BMW seems like one of the many companies that underwent a rough year, and their 2020 sales show it. You could say that it could’ve been so much worse, but, at the same time, it could’ve been a lot better. The bright side in the sales chart is the visible comeback towards the end of the year. In addition to that, their electric vehicle (EV) sales gradually increased. As a result, BMW aims to double the sales figure for its fully-electric models, according to a financial report.Â
Hearing it seems like a very ambitious and weighty goal, yet it’s very doable. And that gets better knowing that BMW only had BMW i3, which is their only fully-electric car on sale worldwide until December 2020. After that, the company’s first fully-electric SUV, the iX3, kicked off its first-ever deliveries. However, its timeframe was so short that it didn’t have any noticeable impact. As we go through 2021, the iX3 goes on sale on more markets around the world.
Similarly, BMW announced its aim to increase the electrified car sales by 50 percent – including pure EVs and plug-in hybrid models. “In 2021, we want to increase the sales of our electrified vehicles by more than half. This underlines the importance of electromobility as a major growth driver for our company,” said Pieter Nota, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, who’s responsible for Customer, Brands, and Sales in a recent statement.
Currently, sales figures of BMW’s pure EV models and electrified versions remain unspecified but rather include them in one. In 2020, BMW sold 193,000 electrified car units, including plug-in hybrid models. These hybrid models accounted for an increase of 31.8 percent compared to 2019 and about 15 percent of all sales made in Europe. From this standpoint, things begin to look better, and it seems like car makers will have to change their production schedule.
