BMW to add artificial sounds for increased Electric Vehicles safety

A report by Automotive News reveals BMW’s potential plans in adding artificial sounds to their electric vehicles. The purpose is to make these vehicles safer to pedestrians. The same article reports rgar Audi and Mercedes-Benz have already started developing specific-sounds for their own electric vehicles.

BMW is still on the process of weighing to advantages and disadvantages of  adding artificial sounds to their electric vehicles. BMW spokesman in charge for the future electric vehicles family, Tobias Hahn, said the BMW and MINI prototype electric cars are currently not equipped with active sound systems that add artificial noise at low speeds.

Hahn says: “However we have been looking into possible technical solutions for a while and we would be able to add such a feature to our vehicles should this turn out to be a real problem. We are also cooperating with organizations for the visibly impaired in Germany.” No additional details have been given.

A new ActiveE trial will start this year. After two, BMW is expected to launch their very first electric car, the Megacity Vehicle. More technical details about this car is expected to surface this year.
