BMW is turning to laptops for a more efficient and cheaper way to power their electric cars and sales. They are currently testing packs of lithium-ion batteries made by Silicon Valley that are used by Tesla Motors Inc. for their Roadster sports car. These 6,831 cylinder-shaped cells is capable of 245 miles (nearly 295km) per charge, and cost significantly less than big car-only batteries used by other automakers. In fact, Toyota and Daimler are also interested in using this laptop battery strategy for their future vehicles.
Currently, the production cost of electric cars are double the production costs of gasoline powered cars. If the use of laptop batteries will push through, the component costs might turn completely around — making the cost of an electric car will be even lower than that of a regular gasoline powered vehicles. As the components become cheaper, the price of these electric cars will significantly go down.
