BMW is set to continue offering its iconic BMW V8 engine, thanks to strong demand in the United States and select markets. Even as the industry moves toward downsized powertrains, BMW has already phased out its V12 and V10 offerings. Yet, the V8 remains a favourite among enthusiasts who crave its unique sound and smooth delivery.

According to BMW’s development head, the traditional V8 engine delivers an emotional experience that electrified inline-sixes cannot match. Despite similar performance figures from modern hybrid powertrains, many customers appreciate the V8’s refined character and robust feel, making it indispensable for markets like the US and the Middle East.

Regional regulations play a significant role in this decision. In regions with more relaxed emissions standards, BMW continues offering larger engines, while stricter European rules push the brand toward smaller, more efficient engines. This approach means that while European models often come with inline-three or inline-six options, buyers in the US can still enjoy the legacy of the V8 in their luxury vehicles.
Future models, including refreshed X5, X6, and X7 versions, are expected to continue this tradition. The brand’s commitment to the BMW V8 reflects its heritage and highlights how customer preferences and regulatory environments shape the evolution of automotive engineering.
