BMW wants to avoid U.S. gas-guzzler taxes

BMW hopes to avoid gas-guzzler taxes that are added on top of the base prices of some of their vehicles in the U.S. President of BMW NA Jim O’Donnell, says that they are focusing on fuel efficiency researches so that they will not be under gas-guzzler taxes for the refreshed version they are about to launch in the next few years.

The gas-guzzler taxes, or the fee assessed for each new vehicle that fails to meet the required fuel efficiency level of 22.5 mpg, are huge. For example the 2010 BMW 550i GT is charged $1,000 gas-guzzler fee, $1,300 for the BMW 650i convertible, $1000 for the 2010 BMW 750i, and $3,000 for the BMW M5. So it becomes even more expensive for BMW’s customers. O’Donnell is determined to solve this and protect their image as automakers before they start to be labeled with it.
