Rumor has it that the highly successful BMW X1 will get a new design in 2016 and it will be based on the new front-wheel drive architecture by the German automaker. BMW Blog reports that this move will allow the vehicle to have more interior space but it will maintain its driving dynamics. The upcoming MINI vehicles and the upcoming 1 Series GT will also use this FWD platform.

This decision may come as a surprise for some especially because the X1’s rear-wheel drive and xDrive models garnered more than 300,000 units sold and received a lot of good reviews in terms of handline, versatility and fiel efficiency. However, dropping the iconic rear-wheel drive platform is in line with the direction that BMW wants to take. Especially in terms of lower production costs and added packaging benefits. Because of the space saved, the second generation X1 might offer an upgraded interior and gadgetry.

The X1 family will be exclusively powered by four-cylinder engine since BMW has already confirmed that it has no plans to re-engineer its six-cylinder engine for transverse mounting.
