Diesel engines are in danger of extinction in German cities as the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig may impose diesel driving bans in the future if they see no other way to comply with the pollutant limits.
Local authorities may be forced to impose diesel driving bans in the future. It is expressly emphasized that even Euro 5 diesel may be denied entry into cities at the earliest from September 2019. Exceptions for craftsmen and certain groups of residents are also required by the judges.
Consequently, what the judges have currently allowed is nothing more than a restricted ban on older diesel passenger cars with the Euro 4 and older emission standard, in individually designated zones or routes. Newer vehicles with the Euro 5 emission standard can be affected at the earliest from September 2019.
