These spy photos hint that BMW might be testing a 2 Series Gran Coupe. German media says BMW’s Chief Development Officer, Klaus Fröhlich, is advocating for the rear-wheel drive Gran Coupe to join the coupe and convertible. The car not only speaks to the customers’ needs, but also to the economies of scale because the rear-wheel drive architecture is shared with the future 3, 5 and 7, each with different wheelbase and track width.
The exterior design is based on the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible models, but with a slightly longer platform to accommodate the sleek roof line and increased size. If the spy photos are any indication, then the 2 Series Gran Coupe sports short overhangs at the front and rear with a coupe-like profile all around. Because of the stretch to accommodate a slightly lengthened platform, the elongated roofline is lower, more rounded.
Under the hood, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will have the same engine lineup from the coupe and convertible models, a combination of four and six-cylinder powerplants.
The market launch is scheduled for 2018.
