The official launch of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe G42 platform is just around the corner. Earlier this month, we have seen press previews and pre-drives, but we’ll soon find out what’s been kept under wraps. Until such time, rendering artists will continue to show their work based on recent spy photos. Nicolas, a guy from FutureCarsNow, gives us his insight on the 2 Series design today. They don’t appear to be far off, based on recent images.
The new 2 Series Coupe G42 and the 1 Series Hatchback have very little in common, which is easily noticeable. It sits at the top of its class in terms of exterior styling. The daytime running lights with just one curved light strip also clearly distinguish them from the rest of the model range. The kidney grille is also unique in the current BMW lineup with a less conventional shape, but certainly not oversized. The lower front fascia features massive air curtains, pointing to an M Performance Automobile with the M Sport Package.
The side profile is typical of a rear-drive BMW, with a long bonnet, short overhangs, and a tight rear-end with wide hips. It’s also fascinating to see how far back the greenhouse extends, resulting in an appealing design that’s certainly unique in today’s sea of front-wheel-drive compact cars.
It also comes with improved aerodynamics, with front-end lift reduced by 50 percent. The front splitter, air curtain, turning vanes, and even the fuel tank cover have optimized to reduce front-end lift, resulting in improved front-end grip, turn-in, and sharper responses.
The 2 Series Coupe G42 now comes standard with new, specifically tuned stroke-dependent dampers, similar to the G20 3 Series. Electrically controlled adaptive dampers will be available as an option on all models in conjunction with M Sport suspension.
