Not that while ago, rumors about a new BMW X2 started spreading, and while at first nothing was confirmed, it quickly turned out to be the truth. Ian Robertson, BMW’s Sales Chief, said for Automotive News that the launching of new compact crossover will happen in the near future.

While Robertson confirmed that this is actually happening, he didn’t want to go into any more details about the project. It’s still unknown what will be the name of the car, but it’s certain that the company is planning to introduce it to the market.

For now it’s known under the name X2 and it will be a coupe version of X1. As odd as this may sound, Germans have good reason to do so – the numbers show that sedan models are not as hot as they used to be, and the audience is switching to crossovers.

The companies projections state that in 2016 the crossover will make around 40% of total sales in the U.S., which means a big increase compared to around 30% ratio in 2015.

Ludwig Willisch, the President of BMW North America, stated that some other manufacturers are expecting their crossover models to make up 60-70% of total sales, and that sends an even stronger message about the demand for crossovers.

Another thing that confirms this info is the investment BMW made in the Spartanburg plant that will have an estimated capacity of 450,000 units per year. In practice, the only thing we don’t know yet is the visuals of the new X2 model. It’s safe to predict it will be similar to the other X range models, just in the appropriate size.
