Next-generation 2017 BMW X3, Possible X3 M Details

Rumor has it that a possible BMW X3 M model will launch with the third generation X3 due out in 2017. Codenamed G01, the next-gen BMW X3 will move away from the 3 Series architecture and will be built upon a more advanced and stiffer 35up architecture.

Lightweight is the key to the 2017 BMW X3 and the new model is said to be 200 lbs lighter than the current generation.

It will make use of the Bx engine family, so expect more power per unit while still being highly efficient.

Insiders are predicting two new high-performance models, the 360-hp BMW X3 M40i courtesy of the M Performance division and the 422-hp BMW X3 M, which will feature a version of the twin-turbo inline-6 found in the latest BMW M3/M4.

A plug-in hybrid, as the one seen in the BMW X5, will be offered as well, producing 240 hp and 95 hp from the electric motor.

The next-gen BMW X3′s redesigned seats are said to be slimmer and lighter and will recline front and rear. The rear seats also will be fully collapsible in an effort to provide a long cargo area with a usefully flat floor.

A wide range of featured and options offered for the BMW X5 will also make their way into the redesigned G01 X3, including adaptive LED headlights.

Sources say that still no three-cylinder unit will be available for the new X3.
