No Change of Plans for BMW Mexico Plant

The BMW Mexico Plant will be built as planned, and the election of Donald Trump as the president of the United States is not going to change that. Trump has threatened to increase the import taxes on cars made in Mexico, but that’s apparently not enough to make the Bavarian automotive giant switch.

The San Luis Potosi factory will start producing the BMW G20 3 Series in 2019 and make around 150,000 units per year. Dr. Ian Robertson, the BMW CEO, commented on this topic: 

We need additional capacity, so we have chosen to build a plant in Mexico,” he said. The Spartanburg plant produces up to 450,000 cars per year, he said. I don’t think there’s any discussion that BMW is not at home in the United States. Yes we are building a plant in Mexico,” BMW sales and marketing director Ian Robertson told the BBC. Yes we built a plant in Brazil last year. Yes we are building plants in other parts of the world as our capacity increases. But that’s part of a normal strategic manufacturing direction. In a global setup, this is normal business,” he said. “At the end of the day, our commitment to the U.S. is strong.
