In Qatar, the new BMW M2 Coupé makes its debut as the MotoGP Safety Car. It is now the 18th year that BMW M Division has partnered with the organiser, Dorna Sports, the first being in 1999. Ever since this partnership started,  BMW helped ensure the safety of the events by providing an Official Car of MotoGP.
The car this year is amazing! The BMW M2 MotoGP Safety Car has a combined fuel consumption with M DTC of 7.9 l/100 km and combined CO2 emissions of 185 g/km. It was manufactured in the BMW M factory in Garching where it was tailor-made to have lots of safety features, while showcasing BMW M Performance Parts. The lowered thread chassis and exhaust with flap system don’t only look good, they also contribute to the aerodynamics and performance of the car.
The BMW M2 is ideal for this role because of its distinct racing genes. Its new inline six-cylinder engine with innovative M TwinPower Turbo technology and three-litre capacity is a big guarantee of extreme sportiness and performance.
President of BMW M Division, Frank van Meel said: “We are proud to have been a part of this captivating world championship for almost two decades. We are pleased with the deep trust that Dorna Sports has placed in us. In us, Dorna Sports knows it has a strong partner on its side for who the safety of the riders on their high-performance racing prototypes has the utmost priority. We dedicate all of our know-how to this role. The BMW M MotoGP Safety Cars are innovative high-performance models with thoroughbred racing genes. In the 2016 season, we are presenting another genuine highlight. In the BMW M2 MotoGP Safety Car, we are now taking the purism of the new BMW M2 Coupé to the racetrack. We are looking forward to an exciting 2016 season, which is also a special one for our partner Dorna Sports. It is the 25th year, in which Dorna Sports has been responsible for organising and marketing MotoGP. During this period, Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta and his committed staff have managed to establish the motorcycle world championship as the pinnacle of two-wheeled motorsport, which holds millions of spectators around the world under its spell and sets benchmarks in terms of technology and safety. We would like to congratulate Dorna Sports on this anniversary.â€
Joining the fleet of official MotoGP vehicles this 2016 season is the BMW M4 Coupé with water injection, the BMW M3, the BMW X5 M and the BMW M550d xDrive Touring as medical cars this season, and a BMW M5 to be used by a BMW safety officer — all optimized for the need of the event.
The BMW M Award will also be presented this season for the 14th time. It will be presented at the end of the MotoGP to the rider with the best overall result in qualifying where the winner is given an exclusive BMW M car. Now that’s a prize!
