As a great grand tourer with great looks, the BMW 8 Series did not sell well in the market. Many claimed that its high price, enormous coupe-like ride and cheap interior put it at a huge disadvantage compared to its counterparts in the same price range. In light of all these comments from car enthusiasts, does BMW need to revise its 8 Series or not?
BMW will abandon the 8er for the next generation and phase it out at the end of the current model year. However, the 8er Gran Coupe might survive because it is the only car in the 8 Series that sells well. Moreover, enthusiasts prefer sleek four-door models to two-door coupes.
At this point, there is no approved successor to the BMW 8 Series yet, which makes sense given that a new BMW platform will be introduced in 2025. It is worth noting, however, that electrification could open up whole new possibilities for the 8 Series. With electric powertrains, BMW can more easily play around with new body shapes and experiment with new designs. Therefore, while the current 8 Series is likely to be phased out, it may not be the last.
It will be sad to see the 8 Series go, even if it did not really deserve to. The first-generation 8 Series (E31) was a beautiful but expensive. It got a second run almost two decades later. It’s not as charming as its predecessor, but still a wonderful car that had so much potential during its development.
