The late Paul Walker is mostly correlated with the Nissan Skyline GT-Rs, the one he personally owned and used to drove in the “Fast and the Furious” movies, but he was also a huge fan of BMW. One of Walker’s special Bimmer – the 1980 BMW M1 AHG, is now up on purchase on Bring a Trailer.
A bit background, the M1 was constructed as a special homologation for FIA Group 5 sports car racing. Causing manufacturers to build road-going models of the cars they intended to race. BMW selected Giorgetto Giugiaro for the design and Lamborghini for the engineering, but things shortly fell apart.
The partnership with Lamborghini collapsed, prompting BMW to turn to Italengineering for the steel space frame chassis of the M1. Plans for an FIA sports car series to race the M1 also fell apart. The car was only raced as part of the Procar one-make series, which featured a cast of Formula One drivers at the time. There were only about 400 M1 road cars built, plus some race cars.
Engine and Performance
The German BMW dealership AHG modified this M1 in the early 1980s. It acquires a Procar body kit, BBS wheels, BMW Motorsport tricolor livery, and leather upholstery.
Some improvements to the 3.5-liter M88 inline-6 were also included in the AHG treatment. This improves the mid-mounted engine’s performance from the stock 277 horsepower to around 350. Via a 5-speed manual transaxle, power is sent to the rear wheels.
It was purchased in 2014 by its current owner and was previously listed that year on BaT. It’s now showing about 4,200 miles. This means that it’s worth a lot of money on its own, putting the star factor aside. Prices for BMW M1 models were also on the rise and, at the time of publishing, the listing was up to $350,000.
The 1980 BMW M1 AHG was well treated and taken care of but still won’t pass California’s emissions test. Furthermore, if you are from the Sunshine State, it can’t be sold to an in-state private buyer, so you should bear that in mind. Aside from that, it could be a pricey collector’s item.
