VALENCIA (Spain) – FELIPE Massa won Sunday’s European Grand Prix for Ferrari on the new street circuit around the harbour in Valencia and revived his challenge for this year’s drivers’ championship.
The 27-year-old Brazilian came home ahead of championship leading Briton Lewis Hamilton in a McLaren-Mercedes with Poland’s Robert Kubica third for BMW Sauber.
Massa controlled the race throughout, but almost collided with Force India’s Adrian Sutil as he exited his pit stop on lap 37. Stewards decided the Brazilian had been released in an unsafe fashion and subsequently handed him a reprimand and a €10,000 fine.
Things went awry for Raikkonen shortly afterwards. On his second stop the Finn tried to leave his pit before the refuelling hose had been removed. He quickly stopped again, but only after the hose man had taken a painful-looking tumble, which saw him subsequently stretchered to the medical centre for checks. Fortunately the mechanic was not seriously hurt.
