Rumor: BMW X5 Hybrid with Four-Cylinder Engine

BMW insider Scott27 starts a new rumor around the future F40 X5 and a new hybrid drivetrain. The new X5 will be the first to feature the ActiveHybrid technology with a 2.0 liter four-cylinder diesel engine. The internal combustion engine is helped by a 15 kilowatt electric motor that adds another 17 horsepower to the vehicle, allowing it to produce a competitive 221 horsepower for the diesel power unit. It will also have the BMW xDrive system where power is equally distributed to all four wheels with the help of a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

The BMW X5 Hybrid will also be using two parallel vehicle electrical systems: a conventional 12 volt system supplied by the AGM starter battery and an additional 120 volt system that’s supplied by a generator and lithium-ion battery pack located at the vehicle’s luggage compartment. A compact generator is integrated in the aluminum crankcase housing. The high-power electronic system is mounted directly to the gearbox. For battery charging, Brake Energy Regeneration is available.

Another rumor about the X5 is that it will have a high-power, one-meter square solar panel on the roof of the car. This green technology will provide up to one kilowatt-hour of energy and it preheats the transmission fluid to reduce friction during a cold start. The solar panel helps power accessories during idle when auto Start/Stop is functioning. At a standstill, thus solar panel will provide electricity for the climate control system, infotainment, phone charging, and even the vehicle’s battery charger. To improve lateral aerodynamics the X5 Hybrid will have specialized wheels.

BMW is sure to be creating a hybrid for the X Series in the future. However, these information provided by Scott27 are for now, just mere speculations.
