Rumors on BMW Z2 Coupe, Z2 Roadster, and the Future of 1 Series cars

A BMW insider gives new information about the BMW Z2 Roadster and Coupe models. The production of the new BMW Z2 Roadster set to be released mid-2012 followed by a coupe version has already been confirmed last year.

Rumor has it that the BMW Z2 will be based on next generation 1 Series platform and will be built under Project i, BMW’s EfficientDynamicsm and BMW Designworks. It will be a rear-drive vehicle available in different powertrains. There will be an all-electric engine, a hybrid with range extender petrol engine, and a new 1.6 liter turbocharged engine capable of approximately 200 horsepower.

There are also new rumors about the next generation BMW 1 Series. A BMW insider confirms that it will pose some revisions to the small premium compact segment, which has been very profitable in the recent years. The next generation BMW 1 Series will be very innovative in both design and technology. It can even feature technologies that are usually available in more expensive BMW vehicles such as the 5 and 7 Series. The 1 Series vehicles will be sharing its platform capable of using front-wheel, rear-wheel, and all-wheel drive to the 3 Series and Mini cars. Sharing platforms is part of BMW’s strategy to keep manufacturiong costs low.

The BMW 1 Series hatchback will be launched at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. Available in a 3 and 5 door variant, It will be sold to the market shortly after.

Wondering what’s next for the 1 Series? The next generation 1 Series Coupe will launch prior to the BMW Megacity Vehicle. Most probably late 2012. A 1 Series Coupe with an electric drive will be built for evaluation purposes. In 2013, the 1 Series Convertible (F23) will be launched. Rumor has it that a sporty hatchback under the Tii badge capable of 240 horsepower and with limited colors will also be introduced. There is also a rumor that BMW still plans to make a 1 Series Gran Turismo and a Compactive Sport Tourer.
