Spa 24-hour race: Early retirement for BMW M6 GT3

In the Spa 24-hour race that happened this weekend, the BMW M6 GT3 cars went in with a strong standpoint. At previous events, the car showed confident performances and good results. Sadly, it was different for the two cars running. Despite the wins at the 24-hours of Nurburgring and the 8-hours of Indianapolis, the cars could not finish well at the Spa-Francorchamps. This proves how the event comes as one of the toughest racetracks out there.

Spa 24-hour race: Early retirement for BMW M6 GT3
Spa-Francorchamps (BEL), 22nd to 25th October 2020. 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, Intercontinental GT Challenge. BMW M Motorsport. #35 BMW M6 GT3, Walkenhorst Motorsport, Nick Yelloly (GBR), David Pittard (GBR), Martin Tomczyk (GER).

The events started brightly for the team. Behind the wheel, the number 34 car establishes excellent times in practice with Nick Catsburg, Augusto Farfus, and Philipp Eng. Even making it in first place overall during the pre-qualifying runs. However, both cars dropped several positions upon the sudden change of weather. But that didn’t stop the drivers. The #34 car brave through the race and fought for a potent position. However, it ends up being forced to the pit after a crash in hour four.

“It was indeed regrettable for that accident to happen. We were in a group of cars when suddenly the car in front of me started to weaken its pace. I hit it hard and cause terrible damage to the BMW M6 GT3’s front. At that time, I think I may not have been able to handle the situation more properly.”

“I am most apologetic about that for the whole team. Personally, this event felt like the end of a series of successful races but Im looking forward to go back on the attack at Kyalami,” said Nick Catsburg, after the race.

The accident greatly damaged the car’s front end and radiator. Despite getting it fixed, the car can no longer perform and finish the race. The same unfortunate event happened with the #35 BMW M6 GT3, driven by David Pittard, Martin Tomczyk, and Nick Yelloly.

Upon the Blanchimont turn, which was the fastest on the Spa track, Martin suffered a severe accident. The car ended up being unusable but thankfully, the BMW driver were not at all hurt.
